Veterinary Compounding Pharmacy

Pharmacists Helping Vets and Pets

Compounding pharmacies are veterinarians’ best friends. It can sometimes be difficult to get animals to take their medication. Even when it’s wrapped in food, we’ve all seen our pets miraculously spit out their medicine while swallowing their treat.

Compounding eliminates this issue.

Our pharmacy is not in any way an alternative to veterinarians. Instead, our specialty service allows veterinarians to broaden their prescribing abilities.

Veterinarians can control the prescription strength, dosage size, and formulation. This enables veterinarians to completely customize the medication to fit the needs of their pet patients.

How Compounding Helps

Our compounding pharmacy can prepare:
  • Flavored medication
  • Medicine in ideal size, strength, and dosage form
  • Unavailable medications
  • Combinations to improve compliance
  • Novel devices and delivery systems

Our pharmacy is a helpful means to an end. We work with your practice to solve medication problems for any animal, including pets, exotics, horses, and zoo animals.

Transdermal Medications

For many pets, a transdermal solution may be the best option for healing.

Applying a lotion, gel, or cream is a direct and stress-free method to administer medication. This works great for animals that should not be stressed out due to cardiovascular or hypertensive issues.

The compounded medication can be applied to the inside of an animal’s ear or another hairless area to deliver the drug.

This is an excellent method to avoid a battle with animals who strongly resist being medicated and directly address the site of infection or swelling.

Advantages of Transdermal Medications

There are a variety of alternative dosage forms where medication is absorbed via non-oral routes. These include parenteral and rectal routes.

Transdermal absorption offers several advantages, such as:
  • By avoiding the gastrointestinal system, more active ingredient is absorbed, and a smaller amount is required for the therapeutic effect.
  • Direct application and absorption at the target site can lead to higher tissue levels and lower blood levels. Side effects like GI irritation can be eliminated.

Different drug interactions can be avoided when multiple medications are administered transdermally.

Animal Pain Medication

We know animals are stubborn when it comes to pain. They do their best to hide that anything is wrong and resist help.

Compounding pharmacies specialize in developing dosage forms that make getting past a stubborn pet or animal easier. These include:
  • Flavored chewable tablets
  • Transdermal creams
  • Flavored liquids
  • And more

They are compounded in our lab specifically for the animal it is intended for.

With the guidance of veterinarians, we combine the specific active ingredients with the precise dosage strength best suited for the animal. Since animals come in a large variety of shapes and sizes, the ability to completely customize their medication will help ensure their needs are met.

Pet Wound Care

Polyox Bandage

Also known as “mucosal bandages,” these are medicated wraps that adhere to a wound or mucosal surface.

This creates a protective barrier and delivers the medication through consistent contact with the affected area.

Prevent Licking

Often times animals will lick the area of their wound and bandage. This can be dangerous if the animal reinjures the wound or swallows the external preparation.

We can add a bitter substance to the bandage to avoid licking.

Phenytoin/Lidocaine

Phenytoin helps promote wound healing through several mechanisms. Lidocaine helps reduce pain at the site of the wound.

When combined with a polyox bandage, positive results can be observed.

Pet Seizures

Some pets suffer from neurological conditions that lead to involuntary muscle movements and spasms. Unfortunately, this is a condition that commonly affects our beloved dogs.

The condition is usually something they are born with, but can also be caused by conditions such as:
  • Liver disease
  • Kidney failure
  • Brain tumors
  • Brain trauma

We can compound a formula with flavoring such as liver or bacon for your pet to successfully swallow.

We also work with non-commercially available drugs such as potassium bromide and phenobarbital.
