Water Soluble vs Fat Soluble Vitamins

Certain types of vitamins are absorbed differently in the body. If they are taken incorrectly, you may not receive the full benefits of what you paid for.

Essentially, there are two types of vitamins: water-soluble and fat-soluble. The names are a big giveaway for how they should be taken.

Water-soluble vitamins include:
  • Vitamin C
  • Thiamin (B1)
  • Riboflavin (B2)
  • Niacin (B3)
  • Pantothenic Acid (B4)
  • Pyridoxine (B6)
  • Biotin (B7)
  • Folic Acid (B9)
  • Cobalamin (B12)

These vitamins are best taken with water and on an empty stomach. They may be more difficult to absorb with food in your belly. Your body does not store these vitamins.

They generally stay in your body for a short time to do their job. Your body will dispose of them through your waste if they are not used.
Fat-soluble vitamins include:
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamin K

These vitamins need to dissolve in fats and oils to be absorbed by the body. They are also stored in the body’s fatty tissue and the liver. Unlike water-soluble vitamins, these remain in your body for around six months or until your body uses them.

For best results, take these vitamins after eating food. This can be a meal or a fatty snack such as a glass of milk or yogurt.

Reach Your Health Goals

It is difficult to reach our recommended daily nutrient intake through food alone. It may require a stringent and purposeful diet to reach these thresholds.

Our supplements and vitamins may help fill in the gaps in your daily diet. Whether you have recommendations from your healthcare provider or are curious about commonly overlooked nutrition, we can help you figure out a dynamic regimen to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
