Water Soluble vs Fat Soluble Vitamins

Get acquainted with the correct way to take supplements! Some vitamins are absorbed differently in the body. If they are taken incorrectly, you may not receive the full benefits of what you paid for. Essentially, there are two types of vitamins: water-soluble and fat-soluble. The names are a big giveaway for how they should be taken.

Water-soluble vitamins include:

  • Vitamin C
  • Thiamin (B1)
  • Riboflavin (B2)
  • Niacin (B3)
  • Pantothenic Acid (B4)
  • Pyridoxine (B6)
  • Biotin (B7)
  • Folic Acid (B9)
  • Cobalamin (B12)

These vitamins are best taken with water and on an empty stomach. They may be more difficult to absorb with food in your belly. Your body does not store these vitamins. They generally stay in your body for a short time to do their job, if they are not used, then your body will dispose of them through your waste.

Fat-soluble vitamins include:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamin K

These vitamins need to dissolve in fats and oils in order to be absorbed by the body. They are also stored in the body’s fatty tissue as well as the liver. Unlike water soluble vitamins, these vitamins are able to remain in your body for around 6 months, or until your body uses them. For best results, take these vitamins after eating food. This can be a meal, or just fatty snack such as a glass of milk or cup of yogurt.
