Pediatric Compounds

There can be many challenges when it comes to medication for children. Most medicines are not labeled for pediatric populations. They are generally geared toward adults.

Since the pediatric demographic makes up a smaller portion of the population, drug development receives limited investment.

Children already refuse or struggle to take medication. A lack of drugs tailored to their needs can lead to further struggles.

Compounding allows us to create tailored medication for children. We can modify:
  • Taste
  • Color
  • Fragrance
  • Viscosity
  • Texture
  • And more

We consider the physical and chemical properties of each active and inactive ingredient in the medication. This allows us to develop the best possible medicines for your child.

Reasons Kids Resist Medications

It is no secret that kids do not like medication. Below are reasons kids may deny medication and how compounding helps address that concern.
  1. Dislike Taste or Texture – medicine can be bitter or have an off-putting taste to children. We can add flavors to medications to help mask the taste and make it easier to ingest.
  2. Difficulty Swallowing – children can struggle swallowing pills and other solid forms of medications. We make the desired medication into easy-to-ingest forms such as troches, RDTs (rapid dissolve tablets), liquid suspensions, and more.
  3. Fear of Injections – injectables can be painful and daunting for kids. Again, we can change the form and use the necessary active ingredient. This includes topical creams with the required levels to account for bioavailability.

Traditional Medications Unfit for Children

While traditional medications work well for the adult population, they often are not suitable for children. Traditional medicines fail to accommodate children in two aspects:
  1. Dosage Size – traditional medications have limited options for dosage size and concentrations. Because they are geared towards adults, those options don’t often include an appropriate size for children. Compounding allows us to develop medication to the exact dosage size the pediatric patient needs.
  2. Ingredients – many traditional medications contain fillers. They also have ingredients that may cause allergic reactions or irritations. Compounding pediatric medicine gives you control over the ingredients. We can remove unnecessary fillers, allergens, and even sugar.

Common Pediatric Compounded Medications

Lansoprazole & Omeprazole

These drugs alleviate gastrointestinal issues such as gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), acid reflux, and indigestion. They are taken orally.

Promethazine

Helps with nausea and vomiting in children. This drug is commonly compounded into a transdermal gel and absorbed through the skin.

Fluconazole & Ibuprofen Topical Cream

This topical cream is applied to irritated skin to reduce inflammation, itching, and redness. It is an antifungal that helps reduce rashes on the skin.

Common Pediatric Compounded Medications

Children with Autism, ADHD, or Sensory Processing Disorder

Special needs children may uniquely experience sensations. This means they can be hypersensitive to certain feelings and possibly react negatively to medications.

Some children may have tastes or textures that are not enjoyable to experience, whether in their mouth or skin. This can lead to non-compliance and other reactions like crying or even vomiting.

Our compounding pharmacy can change the medication form into one the child can tolerate. These forms include:
  • Capsules
  • Rapid dissolve tablets (RDTs)
  • Liquid (solutions/suspensions)
  • Topical
